Regional Legal Counsel EMEA (f/m/d)

Patagonia is in business to save our home planet. You’ll be helping Patagonia achieve this by providing legal analysis and advice on a broad range of topics to support the operations of Patagonia Europe Coöperatief U.A., a subsidiary of Patagonia Works. Key focus for this role will be advising the business on EU laws relating to data protection, corporate sustainability, ecommerce/digital legal issues, commercial agreements, product distribution (wholesale and retail), as well as employment matters and other local laws that impact a global, outdoor apparel and food company.

As the Regional Legal Counsel EMEA, you will be a part of the broader management team for Patagonia Europe and the Patagonia’s global legal team based in California with a reporting line to General Manager of Patagonia Europe and a dotted line to the General Counsel in California.

Main tasks:

  • Advise on compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and other regulations governing the Company’s use of personal data.
  • Advise on existing and developing corporate sustainability regulations, including supply chain due diligence laws, circular economy directives, as well as product claims, and product safety and labeling laws.
  • Partner with EMEA Finance and Sales teams business teams to draft, review and negotiate contracts, including leases, distributor agreements, partner store agreements, license agreements, and documents of any kind that create legal obligations, rights, or responsibilities for Patagonia EMEA.
  • Partner with EMEA Finance and Sales teams to evaluate, advise on, and implement changes with respect to the company’s Ecommerce strategy, product distribution strategy and wholesale dealer relationships for Patagonia EMEA.
  • Partner with the EMEA People & Culture Team and U.S. People and Culture and legal teams on employment issues & with Director of finance and operations on business operational issues.
  • Work with Patagonia’s global brand protection team based in the U.S., to coordinate and manage Patagonia’s intellectual property enforcement in Europe and throughout the Middle East and Africa as needed, including anti-counterfeiting efforts, online marketplace take-down procedures, and working with local customs.
  • Review marketing materials, labeling, advertising, social media, athlete sponsorships, etc. for compliance with local law.
  • Manage outside counsel to advise as needed to support the business.
  • Act as a member of European business’ management team as a business partner to support Patagonia Europe’s financial and operational goals and strategies.

What Patagonia is looking for:

  • European bar membership and experience advising on EU Directives and Regulations European specific organizational structuring experience.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience, ideally with a background in EU data protection law and experience working in-house for a global company. Experience with EU corporate sustainability regulations, as well as experience on related policy issues is a plus.
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in additional languages (e.g. German, French, Italian) is preferred.
  • A love for the outdoors.
  • A passion for saving our home planet and making a positive impact through your work.
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects and conflicting demands.
  • Able to work well under pressure and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across all parts of the business to achieve results that are in line with Patagonia’s unique and dynamic culture.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team and build relationships with internal clients.
  • Demonstrate initiative, be conscientious and provide complete follow-thru in all areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to gather appropriate input and make clear, well-reasoned decisions.
  • Comfortable with team-based work structure; ability to remain flexible to change within the work environment and scope of responsibility.

Other important details:

  • This is a full time position, based in Amsterdam.
  • At Patagonia, people work in the office 3 days per week, and work from home the rest of the week. Patagonia can support employees who need to work at the office more frequently. Patagonia has a hybrid work model, working from home for maximum 3 days per week.
